Freiburg im Breisgau is a vibrant city in southwestern Germany, located in the state of Baden-Württemberg, near the borders of France and Switzerland. It is known for its historic old town, sustainability efforts, and warm climate, making it one of Germany’s most livable cities.

A regional specialty, Schäufele is a smoked and cured pork shoulder, typically served with potato salad or sauerkraut. The meat is tender and flavorful, making it a favorite among locals.

This traditional almond and raspberry jam tart is a delicious pastry, often enjoyed with coffee. It originates from Austria but is very popular in Freiburg and the surrounding Baden region.

1. Freiburg Minster (Freiburger Münster)

The city's iconic Gothic cathedral, famous for its intricate architecture and stunning 116-meter tower. Climb to the top for breathtaking views of Freiburg and the Black Forest. The Münsterplatz (cathedral square) is also a great place to explore local markets.

2. Old Town (Altstadt) and Bächle

Freiburg’s Altstadt is full of charming streets, half-timbered houses, and historic buildings. Keep an eye on the Bächle, the small water channels running through the streets—legend says that if you step into one, you'll marry a local!

3. Schwabentor and Martinstor (City Gates)


These two medieval city gates are among the oldest structures in Freiburg. Schwabentor, in particular, has a small museum inside and is a great spot for photos.
